The track climbs passes through Silver Beech forest with large Matai, Miro, Kahikatea and Rimu trees.

Many of the smaller trees seem to be choked with the hanging lichen, Old Man's Beard.

At this point the track forks and we go right. The track to the left leads to Mount Shrimpton (5 hours to the bushline and return).
